WEEK 11 / Johnny Mnemonic

I've always been a fan of how steampunk looks and the overall aesthetic of it, however when it comes to the stories that are usually told to go alongside them, I find very average. This remains to be true here, and I think it would make up for it by being visually compelling, as steampunk usually is. I think the medium is the problem here, if this was a graphic novel or an anime even, I think it would be much more engaging. Feeling the way I feel about steampunk, I think it would be a good challenge for me to try and write a story rooted in those themes, to see if I can overcome my problems with the genre. I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, I think both steampunk themes, as well as the story, are executed perfectly.  Johnny Mnemonic? Not so much.

WEEK 8 / The Ocean at the End of the Lane

So, with this one, I tried to get into it. I really did. But I just couldn't get through the whole thing. There is something about Gallman's narration style that just doesn't appeal to me. It often comes off as flat, one dimensional, and boring. The story itself is weird and very unpredictable which is refreshing, but right now I don't know if I would sink in more time to finish it. Although, I really like the part where the narrator gets to revisit his childhood home as I'm a sucker for nostalgia. Overall, I wanted to like this one way more than I actually did. Especially since I'm a fan of Coraline.

WEEK 9 / The Martian

For this week we were supposed to read "Space Opera" and I chose upon, "The Martian". I had seen the movie when it initially came out and it was one of my favorite movies of that year, so I was excited to read the original source material. I think if you really break it down, this is a survival story. Akin to Bear Grylls, being in an unfamiliar location, trying to eat, breath, survive, escape, etc. I thought reading about a smart guy trying to work around all those things was super interesting, as it makes you put yourself in his shoes and wonder, "What would I do if I was in the same setting?" Overall, I was a huge fan of this read even if it doesn't feel that " space-operay". I think things like Guardians of the Galaxy, which I love, and Firefly, which I've seen a few episodes of, are better examples.
