Frankenstein & Gothic Genre Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is very commonly referenced when talking about Gothic novels and the Gothic genre. The genre is generally characterized by elements of fear, gloom, horror, death, as well as romance and high emotion. Frankenstein nods to all of these elements, in it’s elegant yet spooky tale of Victor Frankenstein creating the iconic Frankenstein monster, who eventually turns into the reason for Victoria's unravel. The element of horror comes from the building of the monster, pieced together by different body parts, and stiched up to create a whole new human. WEEK 10 / Total Recall

This week I went over "We can remember it for you wholesale". This was the original source material for, "Total Recall". I'm a huge fan of movies and film so I've really enjoyed going back and studying the source material for adapted stories. They tried to adapt this in 2012 again, and I remember thinking it looked cool but ultimately falling flat. Going back and reading the original source material, I feel like an appropriate adaptation for this would be for the series, "Black Mirror". It really aligns with the themes of technology and utopian/dystopian dichotomy depending on perspective. As I've mentioned earlier in the blog, I'm a super nostalgic person, so living in this world of planted memories / manufactured memories would be a nightmare. I believe our memories have a huge hand in making us truly indivudal.

BLOODCHILD ASSESMENT

1. My reaction to this text is quite shocked and intrigued. As I was reading it, It took me a while to figure out what it was really about, as Butler really just throws the reader into the world without much context. I think that the reversal of gender roles is an interesting idea, but it still made me cringe while reading it. Couldn't imagine going through that, really goes to show how women really are much stronger than men in our reality. In this text, however, the idea of a male carrying a baby for an alien reminded me of Riddley Scott's Prometheus, even though it's a woman carrying it in that film. That idea has always freaked me out though, it made me cringe while reading about it in this text as well. 2. As stated in my last answer, I made a text to text connection with that of Riddley Scott's "Prometheus", mainly due to the "carrying an alien baby" plot point.
